CAROLYN THOMPSON
12 February – 14 March 2020
The Eagle Gallery is delighted to announce our second solo exhibition with Carolyn Thompson – Post Moderns, in collaboration with the Laurence Sterne Trust.
Thompson’s recent work originates in a series of fifty small paperbacks published by Penguin Classics in 2018, under the title Penguin Modern. Celebrating the radical spirit of the imprint the series republished texts by seminal writers from throughout the last century ‘who broke the rules, created new means of expression or made their voices heard against the odds’.
Responding to the words of writers including Kathy Acker, James Baldwin, William Burroughs, Shirley Jackson, Primo Levi, Martin Luther King Jr., Fernando Pessoa, Susan Sontag, and others, Thompson created fifty artworks that re-imagine and distill the original texts. Her re-writings reflect the specificity of her collaborators’ original voices, whilst creating something completely new.
‘By cutting, puncturing, folding, sewing, spoiling, rewriting and reimagining these physical books, she has drawn on all the pent-up forces within the texts and released them through powerful visual artworks that challenge us to reassess how we respond to what we read.’ (Penguin Classics, 2019)
A 32 page hard-copy catalogue with an essay by Sean Ashton and Simon Morris will be published for the exhibition. A special edition of 50 copies, including a signed, limited edition print – Dreamers, is available, price £150.
